Moderne Boca’s Protected Backyard

Providing the perfect backdrop for exercise and adventure, the Pondhawk Natural Area not only protects 79 acres of scrub habitats and wetlands, but is also home to some of the tallest pond apple trees in Florida. The natural area contains five native Florida ecosystems: scrub, scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods, hydric hammock, and sawgrass slough.

Blessed with an abundance of sunshine and foliage, two natural surface paths provide more than 2 miles of hiking within the preserve, which adjoins the Spanish River Library.

For residents of Moderne Boca located at the corner of Military Trail and Spanish River Boulevard, the park provides a secluded natural neighbor to be cherished for generations. There are 75 residences planned for the community, with many backing up to the Pondhawk Preserve. The serenity and privacy of the natural woodland is a striking compliment to the contemporary, modern designed residences newly constructed in Boca Raton.

Pets and bicycles are not permitted into the trail system beyond the Pondhawk Natural Area kiosk. Be aware that despite the fact it starts out in a scrub habitat, the South Hiking Trail has sections where you may be wading through the outflow of the marshes. As habitat restoration efforts continue, bulldozer paths in some places make following the trail markers tricky. Spanish River Public Library has a nice cafe you can enter from the side of the building facing Blue Lake.

Trial Map
